Why does my rescue dog bite family? What can I do to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 19 lbs

About a year ago, we found an about age 2 male unneuterd dog. He had a large tear on his neck and several scratches on his back. He did not have a collar/michrochip and the vet estimated he had been out for a month. He was 16 pounds. He is a good boy and very sweet. But he has bitten 2 family members, both when they were leaning over him, and ea was lying down, drawing blood. The 1st time, he bit when he was falling backwards and I was helping. The 2nd time he bit for no apperant reason.

It sounds like Lafayette needs to see a behaviorist. Because he has already bitten two people, you need to get professional help. The behaviorist will watch the interactions and train you how to recognize the signs that Lafayette is giving and how to appropriately respond. You need to know how to act/react as you do not want Lafayette to bite again. I hope this helps!
