Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered
I no longer live in the same house as my cat but I noticed he has been getting on the skinnier side, so far it's nothing serious but I am looking to begin giving him a special meal possibly 2-3 times a week, I am okay with cooking the food because I want to add bacon to his meals to boost his weight gain, I was wondering what is a good type of base food to start with and possible other ingredients I can add to boost healthy weight gain? Thank you.

I'm sorry that Benny seems to be loosing weight. I do not recommend feeding Benny or any other cat bacon, as it is high in fat and salt and can cause problems like pancreatitis and diarrhea. Often cats that loose weight are dealing with an underlying disease or condition. Some of the many causes of weight loss in cats include endocrine diseases like diabetes and hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, or IBD. Additionally dental disease and dental pain can cause cats not to eat as well and lead to weight loss. I would take Benny in to your vet to have him evaluated. He may need to have some blood work done to see if there is any underlying condition leading to his weight loss. You can also discuss his current diet and potentially switching to a more calorie dense food to help him gain weight if needed. Best of luck to you and Benny!

Poor Benny! I would be careful adding bacon as this can be high in fat and therefore, can cause an upset stomach if he isn't accustomed to eating that. I would try some chicken or fish to feed him to help him gain weight. Also, talk to his caretakers about giving him more dry kibble daily if he is willing to eat it. If not, they may want to try some canned food everyday. If Benny is eating ravenously but still losing weight, then I would be concerned something more serious could be going on like hyperthyroidism. High thyroid hormones can cause weight loss and a ravenous appetite. If left untreated, it can cause some serious heart issues. If he is eating normally but losing weight, this could simply be not enough calories or it could be something more serious like inflammatory bowel disease, liver or kidney disease, parasites, and much more. If he continues to lose weight, I would definitely have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to do bloodwork on him and get him started on the proper medication to help him out. I hope this helps!
