Poor guy. Anxiety episodes in pets are best controlled with behavioral modification training along with anti-anxiety medication from your vet. Each pet has a different trigger for their anxiety, which is why having your pet assessed and then worked with on an individual basis with a trainer is ideal. Here is website link to hopefully find one in your area. http://corecaab.org/ I would suggest starting with Fluoxetine for his anxiety medication. If he only has episodes of anxiety that are infrequent and in which you can predict their occurrence (i.e. thunderstorm phobia, firework phobia), then Alprazolam is the go to drug to start with.
