Why is my young puppy limping without a clear injury or accident?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer (duplicate) | Female | unspayed

My 12 week old GSP (female) is showing signs of cruciate ligament damage. Per her breeder, hip dysplasia is not in her lineage and he was of the opinion that she was too young to have acute cruciate ligament damage as her growth plates have yet to form. No tramatic injury or accident took place. Given her age she's been cared for as a toy or lap dog by our family. We do have tile and hardwood flooring and she has slipped from time to time. That's about as rigorous as her life has been to date

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Sansa. I have to agree that a cruciate ligament injury at this age would be highly unlikely. You should take her to a veterinarian in your area to have her leg evaluated. There are many causes for lameness in puppies including injury to soft tissue or bone, nutritional bone disease, among other causes. Your vet can get a detailed history, perform a physical exam, perform an orthopedic exam of the leg and then advise a diagnostic and/or treatment plan based on their findings. They may advise some x-rays to evaluate the leg and get a better idea of what is going on. Good luck with Sansa
