Is it safe for a dog with an empty eye socket to go swimming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 24 days old | 30 lbs

I have a dog that was born without an eye, it is just an empty pink socket. She is around 7 months old now and I was wondering if it would be okay for her to go swimming? She loves to play in water but I've not let her go into deep water and go swimming in case it would somehow hurt the empty eye socket somehow.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Raen. Swimming would be absolutely fine for her. One thing to pay attention to is if any water gets into her ears. The ears are a dark, warm environment and when you introduce water, an ear infection can develop. After swimming, I would use a good ear cleanser to make sure the ear stays warm and dry. Good luck with Raen. I don't think you will see any problems with her eye.
