My cat had a urinary blockage. Can D-mannose & cranberry help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

My cat had an urinary blockage for the first time. He has been hospitalized for three nights with catheter and he is out of pain, eating and grooming. Vet said he saw no crystals in test but sure there was because he physically was able to see and remove them but believe he caught it mid stream. He does still have a thick bladder and urine in blood. He will be on sd urinary wet food, antibotics and probotics for a while. hollistic vet suggest daily d mannose and cranberry powder added can help?

I do not think that adding the d mannose and cranberry power is hurtful to Lio. However the only thing proven to help prevent urinary obstruction is to decrease stress in the house and a prescription diet like Hills C/D, S/D or Royal canine SO. Typically highly stressed cats are more likely to have obstructions. I recommend increasing litter boxes, food bowels and elevated areas for the cat to rest like cat trees. I also recommend feliway a cat pheromone to help decrease stress. The prescription food has a specific saturation ratio which helps dilute the urine and prevent crystal formation. Hope that helps
