My 12-week puppy had shots, met parvo survivor. Should I worry?

I have a 12 week old GSD Puppy. He has had 3 sets of his puppy shots but the other night we were at the park and a lady with a Dalmation puppy asked could they meet. I said yes and as they were playing she said her puppy was a Parvo survivor. Should I be worried?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Branson has had 3 sets of his puppy shots, he will have pretty good protection against parvo already. Also, if the pup he met is a Parvo survivor, presumably the puppy had recovered and was no longer actively shedding parvovirus. So, I wouldn't be too worried. Of course, if Branson develops diarrhea or any other signs of illness, then have him checked out by your vet just to be safe. Hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Branson is still susceptible to the Parvo virus. A puppy is not considered fully protected until the last vaccination is given at 16 weeks of age, & until then, should stay away from public dog parks. Once he receives his 16 week vaccinations, he can go to the park. We do not know when the other puppy had Parvo, but the virus may still be shed in the stool for about 4-6 weeks. Hopefully, Branson did not come in contact with any feces from this or any other dog that might be shedding the virus. Only time will tell. Usual incubation period is 7-14 days, so if Branson remains well, you can relax. Otherwise, please keep him home until he receives his last puppy booster.
