My cat stays outside & meows loudly. Is another cat a good idea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 6.5 lbs

Hi, my cat Wilkie is not going inside anymore since I gave up my other cat and Wilkie left alone. And I have no time for him for my being busy in school. Wilkie sometimes go inside the house and meows loudly, and just few seconds later, he will continue roaming and staying outside. Now, I'm just thinking to get another cat or kitten so he may not get depressed. Is that a good idea?

If Wilkie was used to having a friend, it might help to get him another. However, I noticed you marked him as unneutered, and it could be that there is a female in heat nearby attracting him, which in turn makes him want to stay outside/causes his increased vocalization. Sometimes, neutering can help and may keep him closer to home and out of trouble. Ruling out any illnesses is also a good idea, especially if he seems confused, hurt, or painful when he's indoors or around you.
