My dog's eye is swollen shut, painful, and she's lethargic. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

Pixie woke up this morning with a swollen left eye. I gave her a weight appropriate dose of benadryl and baby aspirin but she has been lethargic all day and her eye is swollen shut and when I tried to get a closer look she yelped. How can I help her? She's eating and drinking but much less than usual.

I would be concerned that Pixie may have a scratch or some type of eye injury or infection. Pixie should see a veterinarian right away to determine what is causing her pain. If she has a lesion on her eye, that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.
