Help! My resident cat attacks new kitten. How to make them friends?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 months and 21 days old | 7 lbs

Please help! I have a seven month year-old male kitten, Sylvester. We recently moved into my moms guest house. She has a two-year-old male cat named Tom. Tom and Sylvester are both indoor and outdoor pets. The issue is, Tom hates Sylvester. I have even seen a behavior change in Tom from it. Tom used to LOVE being pet and held but he hates it and grows just when Sylvester is in the room. Tom screams and attacks Sylvester all night. please help. I want them to love each other.

Unfortunately there is not an easy solution. Most cats all eventually get use to each other an work things out. Don't force them to be together. Separate them when you are not physically with them so that they cannot harm each other. Have separate feeding/watering/litter areas and sleeping areas. This will decrease stress. Purchase a couple cat trees with boxes on top to hide. This will also decrease stress. Lastly, purchase a pheromone diffuser like Feliway. This can help as well. Try these suggestions and give them time. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
