Why is my dog's tick bite oozing yellow discharge? Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 94 lbs

My dog has an open oozing sore where a week ago I pulled an engorged tick off of him. Yellow mucous, he doesn't seem too bothered.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This actually looks very inflamed and possibly infected. I recommend that you have Mikey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely respond well to antibiotics and local therapy with flushing and cleaning of the wound. Good luck and have a good night!
