Will my dog's facial paralysis from an ear infection go away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

My dog has an appointment in a little while so while I'm waiting i looked up his symptoms and I think he has facial paralysis on his left side from an ear infection. Last time he was at the vets they took him in the back to put stuff in his ears and a couple days later there was stuff draining from it like they punctured it or something so I think it caused an infection which also caused done paralysis. My question is, is the paralysis temporary until his ear is back to normal?

I'm sorry that Joel is having this problem! Middle or inner ear infections can sometimes affect the nerves that control some of the facial muscles, so it's certainly possible that this is what you're seeing. Your veterinarian will do an otoscopic exam to see exactly what's going on inside the ear, and will get him started on an appropriate treatment plan depending on what is found. In some cases, facial nerve issues that are secondary to ear infections will resolve when the infection is treated; in other cases, some of these issues can be permanent. Your veterinarian should be able to give you a better idea of what to expect after Joel's exam today.
