My old unspayed dog has a growing breast lump. Could it be cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 14 years and 8 months old | 70 lbs

My dog is 14 a Stafford bull terrier. She has a lump on under her breast towards the back of her. In the last few weeks it has got quite large. I’d say it’s about 3 inches in length and 2 inches wide, Ive Google’d somethings it could be. She’s got arthritis in the last 6 months so when she goes to jump on things she is sort of straining as sometimes she can’t get up. Do you think this could be a hernia?! Or the horrible dreaded illness Cancer! Again she’s had it a while but its got a lot bigger.

An unspayed female dog with a lump on one of the teats is almost always breast cancer. It could either be malignant or benign but, since you stated it has grown very large in a short period of time my guess is that it is malignant. it is very unlikely to be a hernia. It is possible, just not likely. You really need to get her to your vet for an exam so you can get a proper diagnosis and discuss treatment plans. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Kodi.
