My dog won't stop barking for attention. What training helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 13 days old | 40 lbs

My dog barks for attention. How do I stop it? He barks until we give him what he wants. Its getting annoying. I tried to give him treats to stop this behavior by asking him to be quiet. (Trained him to be quiet on command but doesn't help) He stops barking until I stay near him then barks again when I leave. He barks a lot when my mom leaves to cook. He barks for what my mom cooks. I tried so much to stop this behavior and failed. What should I do?

Patience is key. Continue to reinforce the "No bark" command. Try to determine the cause for barking (boredom, hunger, stress, anxiety, etc) and decrease or eliminate the stimuli. This can be a very common issue with pet owners. Dogs will bark for many reasons- play, alerting owner, danger and even excitement. It is important to work on basic commands like sit, come and stay. When Aira is barking I would re direct her attention to another behavior. For example, tell her to come and sit than reward this behavior with a treat. It is important to reward the positive behavior you want her to do

Some dogs are more likely to bark as a response to stimuli than others, either due to their breed or individual temperament. Barking can occur as attention seeking behavior, territorial/guarding behavior, fear responses, among others. This can be one of the most challenging behavioral issues to manage. If Sansa's barking is affecting everyone's quality of life, consider consulting a veterinary behaviorist for the most appropriate training and conditioning strategies for her.
