My cat is limping badly but acting normal. Emergency vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 12.5 lbs

My cat has been limping on his right hind leg mildly since Thursday and badly since Saturday. I have an apt with my vet tomorrow, but am wondering if I need to take him to an emergency vet today instead. He is still eating/drinking normally and I haven’t noticed a change in litterbox behavior. He puts a tiny bit of weight on the foot, but very little. I can find no signs of foreign bodies in the paw, lumps on the leg, etc.

Hi there. A couple things could be going on with Sam. He could have a soft tissue injury, a fracture, or he could have an abscess in his leg or foot that has not come to the surface yet. If you’re able to take him to the vet on emergency today it would just help him feel more comfortable more quickly but if that is something that is difficult to do you should be OK to wait until tomorrow because he’s acting normally otherwise. I hope that helps and that Sam feels better soon. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
