Senior dog losing undercoat, looks skinny, and is very clingy. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female

i have a 9 year old border collie. She is well but recently had a weird moult, she has a double coat normally but within a week all her short fluffy under coat dropped out, leaving just her guardhairs. She looks so skinny now. The only other change i can think of is that since this happened she's been really clingy. Should I be worried?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rosie! Since Rosie is older I would have her examined by a Vet. There are some endocrine conditions like hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and cushings disease that can change the hair coat. Also underlying metabolic conditions can affect the health of the fur and since you mentioned that she appears thin, I think full blood work (with a thyroid and urine) is what Rosie needs. I hope this helps and I wish Rosie the best!
