Why is my new puppy nursing on my older female dog? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 27 days old | 3.5 lbs

I have both a 1.5 yo and a 7 yo female dogs who have never had puppies and are still intact, never altered. We brought home a new puppy who is male and now 8 weeks. We got him when he was 6 weeks old and this week has begun to nurse on our 1.5yo. I have tried to discourage it but even after he's eaten and leaves food he'll go to her to nurse. She doesn't seem to mind and allows it. I don't know anything about this. Anything you can tell me about this and what to do about it?

Congratulations on adding Baron to your family! I don't think the nursing will hurt the female and I would suspect this will pass. Depending on much this happening, the only real problem I could see would be the teats getting chapped. I think either Baron or the female will tire of the behavior and stop. I would recommend to neuter him though before puberty so you don't have to worry about puppies! I hope this helps and thank you for using Pet Coach!
