Accidental mating: Can my small dog safely deliver large puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 25 days old | 50.2 lbs

Hi there I have a female pomerianain terrier (26lbs) and a jack russell terrier / lab mix (50.2 lbs) and they have their appointments at the end of the december to get fixed (long wait in my city). We usually keep them separate but today they ended up mating and got stuck together for 20 minutes. If she ends up getting pregnant, will the puppies be too big or is she able to safely have them? She’s never been pregnant.

I would be concerned about the size difference and the possibility of her needing a c-section. I would recommend calling and explaining your situation and maybe they will move up her spay procedure in the next week or so. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
