My new dog threw up worms. Is my family safe from getting sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 5.5 lbs

Just took in a 7 year old yorkie this weekend and he got sick tonight a yellowish noodle looking worm was in his vomit I do plan to call the vet in the morning to see if I can get him in as soon as possible! Should I be concerned for my family we’ve all been petting him and letting him sleep with us. Tonight I will be putting the poor little guy in his crate just to be safe. I guess I just want reassurance that he’s gonna be ok Thanks in advance

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible that little Billy has roundworms, but with just common sense precautions, your family will be fine. Parasites are sometimes a part of pet ownership, so as long as everyone remembers to wash their hands after playing with Billy, & especially before eating, all will be fine. It was a good idea to crate him until a fecal analysis can be done, but once the appropriate wormer is given you can relax. Take care.
