My cat has fluid in his chest. Will the pleural effusion return?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 9 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My 9 year old cat had blood work showing he has diabetes. Then 3 days later he had labored breathing, loss of appetite, lethargy and X-rays showed a pleurel effusion. Did a chest tap but he's still slightly laboring. Will the fluid continue to come back?

I'm so sorry to hear that Max is going through this. I'm sorry to say that unless the cause of the pleural effusion is found and treated, it will continue to come back. If your vet sent some of the pleural effusion to the lab for testing, hopefully they will be able to give us an idea of what is causing the pleural effusion. Sometimes we also have to do an ultrasound of the chest and/or abdomen to find the cause. Good luck! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
