My dog park has lice. Should we spray the ground to stop the spread?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered

Our dog park has had 5 dogs infected with sucking lice over a period of 6 or 7 months. After the most recent 1, some users have requested that the desicated granite gravel be sprayed. Is there a point to this, given that the bugs are rarely if ever transmitted through the surface?

Lice are fairly easy to treat, so we generally don't need to treat the environment. However, nits can live for 1-2 weeks off a dog and adult lice can live for a few days, so it is possible that the dog park could be an environment for dogs to contract lice if there has been a severe infestation. I have attached more information on lice below although it sounds like you have already done your research on lice. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2794 Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
