My cat was attacked by a coyote. Is his new aggressive behavior PTSD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8.2 lbs

My kitty was attacked by a coyote yesterday morning around 11am. He managed to escape with only minor cuts and bruises. He was hospitalized and kept stable for most of yesterday but now I’m worried he may have PTSD. I picked him up around 8pm yesterday and around 2am today I woke up to him at the end of my bed, which is normal, but he was whining which isn’t. He seemed to not be “here” if that makes sense. He then attacked my foot and tore a pretty good chunk of skin. Could he have PTSD?

There is no evidence that cats can suffer from PTSD, but even if he would, this is not something that can be assessed so close to an incident such as this one, you should give him at least a couple weeks to get back to his normal self as this can be a traumatic event for him.
