My dog was given a Cerenia shot after having episodes of vomiting in the morning. Since then she has been sleeping all day and the vomiting has stopped. She doesn't want to eat and has only been drinking water when I offer it to her. She hasn't pooped or peed since this morning assuming it's because she hasn't eaten or has drank a lot of water today. Is this normal when on Cerenia? Are these side effects of the medication? Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 46 lbs

These are not side effects of the medications, these are symptoms related directly to the medical condition that caused the vomiting in the first place. if by tomorrow you see no improvement you will need to take her back to the vet.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I have seen lethargy with the injectable form of cerenia not so much with the oral. It is only given once daily so yes it should be pretty much out of her system by 24 hours. Cerenia helps with nausea and eating. I think she is most likely not eating from her pancreatitis not from the cerenia. I would contact your vet to discuss other medication options since you seem to not like the cerenia. Personally I think you should be giving it. Good luck

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Sometimes Cerenia can make a dog sleepy. It is a good sign that she has not had any more diarrhea. If she is eating and has not developed any new symptoms, then I would continue to monitor her. If she is not acting more normal by morning, then I would contact her veterinarian. My cat was vomiting today. He would meow in distress before doing so and when he vomited it wasn't a large amount and it had a foul odor. He did this 4 times before I took him to the vet. The vet gave him a shot to control vomiting for next 24 hours.

I am guessing the injection given was Cerenia. Side effects are uncommon with the use of this medication, but the most commonly noted side effects were: drooling, drowsiness, diarrhea, and appetite loss. I would be worried and I think he needs to get back to the vet. Were any x-rays or blood testing done? If not, that needs to be done to figure out what is going on. This sounds like it could be something more serious going on. If it was just a simple upset stomach he should be feeling MUCH better after that injection and not sleeping for 10 hours. I would be worried.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with Jorja. I am going to go out on a limb and assume the anti nausea medication provided was Cerenia. This is typically a very effective medication for vomiting, and if there is still vomiting in the face of this, I would definitely recommend getting her back into the vet for re-examination. I would strongly recommend x-rays and blood work. Depending on the level of dehydration, hospitalization with IV fluids would likely be useful particularly if the vomiting is going to continue. Hope this makes sense.

I'm glad you have been in contact with Alaska's vet. Lethargy is a side effect of CERENIA, and this lethargy could potentially lead to slow and even breathing. That kind of breathing is ok. I would continue to monitor her.

The injection is called Cerenia, if this didn't help then you must take him back to the vet for a blood test and xray/ulrasound, he might be suffering from either a foreign body in the GI tract or severe gastrointestinal infection.

I'm sorry Sam is so sick! Excessive drooling and lethargy are side effects of Cerenia, and those certainly can be causing the symptoms you are seeing now. I would monitor him for now, and watch out for additional side effects such as fever, convulsion, panting, and muscle tremors. Should you see any of those signs, I would rush Sam into an ER vet immediately. Otherwise, wait until the morning to get the blood test results. Just to add, I'm always an advocate of seeing a vet just to be safe. In my opinion, it's best to be safe than sorry, and if you are very concerned about Sam, it's certainly find to take him into an ER vet to get checked out. Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication, not a true appetite stimulant. A decrease in appetite is not a common side effect but was occasionally noted in safety studies. I think it’s more likely that Trixie’s decreased appetite is due to her disease rather than the medication. If you’re concerned you could ask your vet about other anti-nausea options but Cerenia is usually the most effective medication in cats.

It sounds as Cooper is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
