How to stop my dog barking at my elderly dad and his walker?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 27.5 lbs

Ever since I brought Buddy home from the shelter in January. He has been barking and growling at my 90yr.old dad. He uses a cane and a runaround. Buddy barks at him in the night when he gets up to go to the bathroom and in the morning when he gets up. I don't know how to get Bufdy to stop it. Dad gives him treats and bits of his food. We've live together for 10 months. Buddy should know that dad won't heart him. How do I get him to stop barking at my dad?

It's possible that the cane/walking devices are what is causing Buddy to bark and growl, rather than your dad. Seeing if this is the case by removing the cane (when your dad is comfortably sitting and not moving around!) and seeing if you get the same reaction can help. You can also leave the cane out for Buddy to sniff/explore without it moving around, and offer some treats every time he approaches it calmly. This may help him get a bit more used to it without being "scary" like it might be as its moving about with your dad.
