Is Optifiber stopping my kidney cat from vomiting hairballs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

My 11 year old male cat Jake has kidney disease. He's doing well with the kidney diet however the vet has also prescribed optifiber as an anti-nausea thing. For the last couple of weeks he's been acting like he wants to vomit I think it's probably a furball but he can't seem to do it and I'm beginning to wonder if the optifiber is stopping him from getting that furball up.

Optifiber is a fiber supplement that does not have any anti-nausea properties, so it would not stop Jake from vomiting a hairball. If Jake has kidney disease, he may need a direct anti-nausea medication like pepcid, so I would contact your veterinarian to let them know what is going on and see what they would recommend for Jake. They may recommend changing things up a little. I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
