My cat has a back lump that drained. Should I still go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 23 days old

I think my cat (7 months old) has an abcess on his back. It's a lump with small scab - it was oozing pus 2 days ago but is no longer oozing/draining. Doesn't seem to be bothering him except when I try to touch it. I'm wondering if it's likely to clear up on its own now that it has drained or if I should go to the vet for antibiotics.

Ronald is absolutely adorable! I would recommend taking Ronald to a vet. If there is an abscess and it is not draining anymore, it can fill back up and ooze again. He can also become sick if the abscess is not properly taken care of. Your vet will most likely shave the area and clean and flush it out. They then can prescribe antibiotics and if he is very painful a pain medication to help him. I hope Ronald feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
