My chihuahua is sluggish, not eating, hiding, and seems to be in pain.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | 5 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

My dog has been sluggish, only wanting to sleep and lay. He’s not interested in food or water in less I feed it to him in his kennel. He HATES his kennel but that’s the only place he wants to be right now which is completely out of character. He is a small 5 year old 8 lbs chihuahua. He normally very active, barking, running excite and happy. He has never been like this. His whimpered when I’ve picked him up under his belly and he’s walking with a slight hunch. This is not like him

Aw poor Byron! It sounds like he is pretty sick. Some of what your describing may be related to back or neck pain or abdominal pain caused by gastrointestinal disease. Without an examination it's difficult to say what is causing the problem. I recommend taking Byron to see a veterinarian right away so he can be examined and the cause of his illness can be determined. He may need pain medication and because there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs you will need a prescription pain medication from a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I hope Byron is feeling better soon!
