Dachshund suddenly can't walk, hind legs drag. Is it a slipped disk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

My 5yo dashound has never had trouble walking. We recently moved to Michigan, don't know if that's a factor but suddenly in Span of 2 days he has become unable to stand & walk. His hind legs cross &drag. His front paws are on weird stance & he knuckles. He has a head tilt, still has appetite and wags tail. No sign of pain apart from labored breathing/groan sometimes. Can degenerative myelopathy develop in so quickly? Could it be something else? Vets closed for weekend so can't take him in yet.

It seems like Loki may have a slipped disk or have a buldging disk. This is extremely common in dauschunds. It is ideal that he gets to a veterinarian as soon as possible as some of these cases (depending on how severe clinical signs are) require surgery with a neurologist. I did a quick search for emergency vets in your area and there is a 24 hour emergency veterinarian. Here they will perform a physical examination and see if strict cage rest with medication can be done vs surgery. http://epanimalemergency.com If he cannot walk at all it is extremely important to take him sooner then later since the prognosis with regarding to walk decreases as time goes on. I hope Loki feels better soon and thank you for using PetCoach!
