Kitten injured leg, vet closed. How to keep him comfortable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 28 days old | 2 lbs

One of our little 6 month old kittens had an encounter with a moving truck last night and, thankfully, he came away with just a bum leg. And while I am no professional by any means, we are pretty sure his right back leg has been poped from the hip socket. He is eating, sleeping, drinking, and he has urinated once since last night, but refuses to walk anywhere. There are no vet services available until Monday. How can we keep him comfortable until then?

That's a very tough situation. The leg could be out of socket, broken, or have had a neurologic injury. I would strongly consider driving out of your area to somewhere with an emergency clinic that is open today if that's at all an option. If Luke's hip really is out of place, the longer it's out the harder it will be to put it back because the large legs muscles start to constrict and then never relax, so the bones can't fit together the way they used to. If it's impossible to get to a vet until Monday, try to keep him quiet and not running around. Do not give any human pain medications because they are toxic to cats. Best of luck to you and little Luke
