My dog's chronic diarrhea worsened with steroids. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

Our dog has been having very bad diarrhea for the past 4 months. We’ve been going to the vet. Blood results good. Stool came back good. They’ve been trying out all different antibiotics on her. Nothing works. We did a ultrasound Friday. Stomach and intestines were inflamed and swollen. They said it’s IBS or cancer. We were prescribed steriods. She took them Friday night and Saturday morning. All day Saturday her diarrhea got worse and pooped all over the house. What do we do now ?

That sounds like a very difficult situation. If the steroids are not helping Abby within about 72 hours, I would call your veterinarian to let me know, so they can decide what to do next based on the results they have so far. It sounds like your next option would be to do intestinal biopsies to try to figure out exactly what is going on in Abby's gut. Other options would be a consultation with a veterinary internal medicine specialist if one is available in your area.
