Why is my dog shaking, head down, and acting like he's in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | 13 years and 2 months old | 8 lbs

My dog is 13 years old. He is having mri next week to see if there’s something sinister at the back of his throat. He’s a Yorkshire terrier. He is shaking excessively this morning and he’s wrapped up warm. He is also standing in a position with his head lowered and every time we try and comfort him of put him next to us he is walking away to stand up with tail up and head lowered frozen like a statue with shakes. What do we do?

If this is new behavior for Louie, I would advise to take him into the vet today. That posture indicated pain in normal dogs. If a tumor is present, it could impede the nerve which could also be responsible for an abnormal position but I would most suspect pain as the culprit. The doctor will check his neck and back for signs of discomfort and prescribe medication to make Louie feel better. I hope this helps!
