Why are my dogs humping each other when female is not in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello! I have two dogs. a female with 6 years and a male puppy with 6 months. The female ended her heat about a month and a half but these past week she tried to hump the male puppy twice and he tried to hump her one time. Why is this happening? She is no longer on her heat for about a month and half. Thanks!

This behavior is often considered part of a dominance issue and can be seen amongst any dogs, even neutered dogs occasionally. Be aware that your puppy will be able to mate very shortly and you should consider neutering her or making arrangements to keep them separated for 3weeks when she comes in heat next
