Is homemade mush good for my 3-week-old puppy's weaning diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cane Corso | Female | 21 days old | 3.4 lbs

I am mothering a puppy that is 21 days old. The mother dog is not around. I am using formula and three times a day giving puppy mush. I am making my own mush with cooked sirloin and chicken livers, puppy formula and water. Am I doing right by the puppy or should I be feeding mushed dog food?

I would probably back down on the actual meat products as they may be rich for Luna's little tummy. Royal Canin makes a canned pate' called Baby Dog and its meant for weaning puppies. It's got all the nutrients she needs. I would use that mixed with some formula soaked puppy kibble. Around 5 weeks old, start to decrease the amount of formula. Luna should be weaned off formula by 7 weeks. She is sooo cute! Thank you for using Pet Coach!

Hello, I would recommend giving the puppy some wet puppy food as these are formulated to meed the requirements of young, growing dogs. You can still feed him formula, but you can also add some wet puppy food to the diet. The sirloin and chicken livers are not bad, however, the diet may not be fully balanced. If you would like to feed your puppy a home cooked diet, you can use balanceit.com or consult with a veterinary nutritionist to ensure your home cooked diet is well balanced for your puppy. Hope this helps and best of luck.
