My dog's anal gland infection is draining and protruding. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is on antibiotics for an anal gland infection. I’ve noticed more draining around her anus than normal and a small protrusion coming from her anus this morning. What should I do?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Peaches. Sounds like you should have her reevaluated this morning. More draining could be normal since the anal glands were infected and she is being treated. Not sure what the protrusion could be but sometimes the inner lining of the anus/rectum when swollen, tend to roll outwards giving the appearance of a protrusion. Your vet can check her again to make sure everything is going as planned. Good luck and I hope Peaches gets over this soon.
