My cat has an oily spot on her back and is vomiting. Are they related?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat came in from outside with something oily on her back between the shoulder blades. She is impossible to bathe so I grabbed a wet papertowel and wiped it off and she ran under the bed and fell asleep. When she came out hours later I realized she still had something greasy on her back so I washed that area with soap. It was behind her back so she couldnt lick it. Today she woke up vomiting. Could this be related to what she had on her back? She didn’t lick it at all. She only threw up once.

Unless the oily substance was a toxin and absorb through the skin it is likely nothing that would cause the vomiting. It is more likely that she ingested something while she was outside that caused gastrointestinal upset. There is always the chance that she may have eaten foreign material which could be causing the problem. If she only vomited the one time and is her normal self I would not worry too much and just monitor her for now. If she continues to vomit, becomes lethargic or does not want to eat her food then I would recommend taking her into a Veterinary Clinic to be examined and to have further testing performed such as blood work and x-rays. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
