Cat dental surgery: How long for recovery and cleaning tips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

Frank had 2 teeth pulled on Tuesday and an abscess drained. He was given an antibiotic injection and is now on oral antibiotics two times a day and a pain pill for 3 days. How long does it take for him to heal typically? He has dried blood on his cheek where he was shaved and worked on but I'm hesitant to wash it for fear of hurting him. He is eating liquid food and drinking water.

Hello! It will take about 2 weeks for his gums to heal from the tooth extraction and about 7 days for his abscess site to heal. You can clean the area with some warm water and a wash cloth, just be gentle and Frank should be fine. Best wishes to you and Frank! Thanks for using Pet Coach.
