My cat can't meow after being outside in the cold. What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is an indoor-outdoor cat and she was outside this morning for about 5 hours and it was 45 degrees outside. She came in and for some reason she can’t meow. She’s a very vocal cat so I know something is wrong. What could have happened? Could this be a result of the cold weather?

Poor girl. The cold may have affected her vocal cords. This can happen with people also. I would just focus on warming her up gradually by keeping the temperature indoors relatively warm and then continue to monitor her for the next 12 hrs. As long as she is acting normal, eating, drinking and using the litter box normally she should be able to recover. However if she shows other signs of illness and doesn’t regain her voice, then a vet visit is best to have things checked over. I hope your kitty recovers soon. Best wishes and take care.
