Why are my orange tabby cat's whiskers turning black? Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6.5 lbs

I've noticed that the majority of my orange tabby cat's whiskers have turned black. Is that an indication that she may be sick?

Hi and thanks for using PetCoach! Sorry to hear about Pumpkin but I think this is probably normal. Not sure how old she is, but Orange tabby cats will be born without dark pigmentation around their eyes, nose, lips, and mouth but over time, they will start to develop dark spots of pigmentation. The condition is known as Lentigo Simplex or Complex depending upon how much pigmentation develops. Please see this link- https://www.cat-world.com.au/black-spots-on-cas-gums.html Great question. Good luck with Pumpkin
