Why is my dog aggressive and over-excited? Will neutering help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 8 days old | 40 lbs

My dog has lately become very unmanageable. He's jumping on me, mom and my grandma very aggressively. But he doesn't do that with my dad. He just doesn't listen to anything that we say anymore. I've tried exercising him but still he's over excited and gets aggressive when I exercise him. (Mostly we run together). My question is 1. Will neutering stop his aggressiveness completely? 2 will he be aggressive after neutering too? 3.why is he super excited almost all the time?

Hi there Yes, neutering will help alot. Aggression and wild behavior can be linked to testosterone. Keep in mind that after his neuter it could take 60 days for the hormones to clear his system. I would start there and also get some help from a trainer to manage his behavior which a dog trainer or behaviorist can help with. Neutering will help a lot but you also need some tools to manage him. Best wishes to you and Damon and thanks for using Pet Coach.

Yes, neutering is recommended as the first step however, it is not a guarantee that it resolve the issue. Testosterone levels take about 30 days to go down after neutering so you may not notice a change right away. I strongly suggest you get him neutered and also seek the help of a professional trainer before this dog hurts somebody.
