Why does my Chihuahua's yeast infection smell worse after ointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 7.8 lbs

My female Chihuahua has a mild yeast infection, usually without accompanying smell, due to flea allergies. I am currently treating her with antifungal shampoo, hydrocortisone spray, and an 3-way ointment. About an hour after I treat her, she starts to get the yeast infection smell. The smell lasts for a few hours before fading. Could the 3-way ointment be exacerbating the smell? Would you recommend discontinuing the ointment? Thank you, have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The cream may be exacerbating the smell. I would try discontinuing the cream to see. If the smell still returns I think that Lily should be seen by a Vet and prescribed an anti-yeast or an antibiotic for her skin. I hope this helps and I wish Lily the best!
