How often should I walk my reactive dog with a muzzle & spike collar?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 23.5 lbs

My dog was bit by a bigger male dog when she was 4 months old. I experienced a lot of trouble fixing her trauma by 2 different dog trainers. Neither of them worked and I even tried taking her out myself to socialize at dog parks but even then no luck of her behavior changing. Today I went to PetCo and Gina helped me with a muzzle and spike collar. Later in the store a cute dog approached my dog and she was calmer and less reactive with both of them on. How often should I walk her with these now?

This is great news! I would recommend continuing to work with Panda like this as often as possible. After a month or so of consistently good behavior you can try short walks without the muzzle and see how she does. The more you work with her the better she will become. If Panda has generalized anxiety, to more things other than just dogs, you may consider talking with your veterinarian about a behavior modification drug for her. Oftentimes training, like you are doing, along with medication to help ease her anxiety will help you see results even more quickly. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
