Why is my Shih Tzu puppy's eye red and swollen? Should I see a vet?

Thank you for providing a picture of Squishy's eye! From the picture, it looks as if he may have a problem with his third eyelid, not a stye. It appears that the third eyelid is quite swollen, and this can be a sign of trauma to the eye or an eye infection. I would have him seen by a vet today if possible or first thing Monday. It's very important to have any eye problem checked out promptly because leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can diagnose what is causing this and can treat it. The one eye int he picture has a lot of crusting material around the eye and the eye itself appears to be enlarged. If the veterinarian did not check the eye's pressure, then I would take Friday back to be rechecked and have his pressure tested to see if this is glaucoma and needs different treatment. If not treated in time, the eye can rupture and he may need to lose the eye. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My 7 year old shihtzu has an irritated red eye. She is constantly squinting is and it is watering pretty frequently. It’s been like this for the past 36 hours. What should I do?
Poor Talon! Squinting, redness, and watery discharge can be caused by an eye infection (conjunctivitis), or an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. Some eye problems need to be treated fairly urgently to avoid permanent damage, so without seeing her, the best advice I can give is to take her to an ER today for an exam, if possible. If you can't do this, then I would take her to your regular vet tomorrow. He/she can use a special stain if needed to check for an ulcer or other problem, and will prescribe eye drops or ointment to treat the problem depending on what is found. In the meantime, you can try gently rinsing her eye with plain saline eye wash, and using a warm washcloth or cotton ball to gently wipe away the discharge as often as needed. This will not treat the underlying problem, but may help to make her a bit more comfortable until you're able to see the vet.

I strongly recommend urgent referral to a specialist ophthalmologist to assess fully the extent of the condition. Glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye can cause bulging, redness and swelling in the surface/blue clouding and can be extremely painful, but so can many other conditions. An eye pressure check is recommended urgently in order to rule out this painful condition which can threaten vision

My shizu is having terrible eye problems I really need help I'm very worried
Hi there! I am so sorry Simba is not feeling well. From the picture, it looks like the white part of his eye (called the sclera) is very red. There are many reasons why his eye could be red. He could have a corneal ulcer (a scratch on his eye caused my trauma or dry eye), his could have conjunctivitis (inflammation of the tissue around the eye, caused by allergies or bacteria) or glaucoma (high pressure inside the eye) or something systemic causing these issues. I recommend going to the Emergency Clinic and seeing a veterinarian sooner rather than later if you are worried. Typically, a veterinarian will performed a full physical exam and ophthalmic (eye) exam. This includes a schirmer tear test (to determine if he has dry eye), a fluorescein stain test ( to determine if he has a corneal ulcer), sometimes the vet will check the pressure in the eye too. I've just noticed one of my Shih Tzu eyes is red, the other is fine. What could this be?
Poor guy. THe picture is a bit dark; however, I do see some redness towards the bottom part of the cornea. This looks like possible hemorrhage and should be checked by your vet as soon as possible. THis could be due to some kind of trauma to the eye or it could be a sign of uveitis (inflammation of the inner prat of the eye). If this is indeed uveitis, then the vet will have to do some tests to determine what the underlying cause is. I hope that your pet Winston has some resolve to his eye condition soon! My 7mth old shitzu have a mark in the left eye, I wonder if is ok natural on this dogs, or if an allergy, eye infection or parasite. Her right eye its ok really withe. Or a friction of the hair on the eye?
This could be an inflammation of the sclera (episcleritis). At this time this does not look very dramatic or like an emergency as I cannot see other swelling which would point to more serious diseases such as glaucoma or an underlying autoimmune disease, however I would make an appointment with a veterinarian for an eye exam soon. It is not possible to diagnose this from a photo, and would need a proper eye exam. The cause of episcleritis (superficial inflammation of the sclera) or scleritis (full thickness inflammation of the sclera) is unknown, however toxins, autoimmune disorders and toxoplasmosis are accepted causes, In severe cases the vet may want to take a biopsy under anesthesia to distinguish between a mass and inflammatory tissue. Treatment may be necessary and would consist of corticosteroids and/or other immunosuppressants.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! What you are describing can be a corneal ulcer, scratch, or conjunctivitis. All of these conditions require veterinary care as they are likely to be painful and progression of a deep corneal ulcer can even result in loss of the eye. You can put artificial tear drops in the eye, and avoid any ointments or drops that have a steroid in them as these can make the conditions worse. You can also set Daisy and E-collar to prevent her from scratching the eye and causing further trauma. I would recommend having her seen sooner than Friday to determine what is going on and begin treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pepples. The pictures you submitted are very helpful. It appears as though her conjuctiva (the tissue under her eyelids) is very red and swollen. She also appears to have cloudiness to her cornea (the surface or her eye) and tiny vessels growing across it. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause of these changes. She could be suffering from a corneal ulcer (scratch to the surface of the eye). There is also a condition that is common in her breed that causes decreased tear production. Once she has a diagnosis, treatment can be started and she will begin to feel better. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Symphony. She may have a condition known as cherry eye where the third eyelid becomes prolapsed. She will need to see her veterinarian to know for sure. If this case, surgery can be performed to replace the gland. I hope this information helps!

Hello, I have a 9 week old Australian Shepherd. She seems to have a very watery right eye and it looks swollen on the far left corner. She also seems to be squinting that eye. What could be going on? And what can I do to help?
Poor puppy! Squinting the eye is a sign of pain. From the photo, the only red thing I see is the third eyelid and that looks inflamed. I am concerned that your puppy has either scratched her cornea, is getting a nasty eye infection or has something stuck under the third eyelid. There’s nothing you can do at home for a scratch or infection other than make sure the puppy does not rub the eye as that will make it worse. An elizabethan collar should be worn at all times to protect the eye. I recommend to have the puppy seen today as it likely is uncomfortable. The doctor will use a special dye to check for an injury to the cornea. You pup will likely get eye medications pending diagnosis.
