Is spaying risky for my small rabbit? What are the risks for smaller breeds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | spayed | 8 months and 7 days old | 3.5 lbs

Is my rabbit at risk for spaying? She's a little bit of a smaller and lighter breed and have heard that spaying smaller animal poses a bigger risk. Below I have an image of her compared to a lionhead.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Size is really not a consequence when it comes to a routine surgery like a spay. If your veterinarian is comfortable doing surgery on rabbits, then Mistie should do just fine. Take care.
