Is it okay for my puppy to have a treat puzzle in crate without water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 11 days old | 51 lbs

I crate my puppy (6 mos old) during the day with a 20-30 minute potty break midday (until she’s old enough to be left out in the house). I want to leave a treat puzzle to keep her occupied but I don’t put water in her crate since she gets plenty the rest of the day and it takes up so much space and usually ends up spilled. Is it mean to give her a treat puzzle toy that typically makes her thirsty without immediate access to water?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not think this is mean at all. As long as she has plenty of access to water before going into the crate, in the middle of the day & in the evening, & the temperature is consistently comfortable, she will be fine. Take care.
