My dog's allergy shot isn't working; is Apoquel better long-term?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 4 lbs

So my vet told me that both my dogs have allergies to pollen and prescribed them both Apoquel and then mindy was given a shot but i dont remember the name. I think it was new because my vet said she is perfect candidate for it. We were told come in every 4 to 6 weeks but it doesnt seem that the shot is working and that the pill is better. What can i do to help them not suffer?

The shot was likely cytopoint. Depending on the dog sometimes the shot works better and sometimes the pill works better. I even have some patients that need both to help control their allergies. If you feel like the pill worked better then I would contact you vet for a prescription of apoquel for her as well. I think it is perfectly safe for her to have apoquel on a long term basis as long as she has no other medical issues. You can talk to ypur vet in more details about whether or not she is okay to stay in apoquel long term. I hope this helps!
