What's this soft, non-tender lump on my dog's back/hip? Emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 20 lbs

My dog was fine this morning then this afternoon I let him in the back yard to go potty and when he came in I noticed a large pocket on his back/hip area. I don't know if it's air or fluid? It doesn't seem to be tender. Could this be from a spider bite /allergies? Or is this an emergency?

Poor cash! This could be a mass or an infection. If he is eating, drinking, doesn’t seem painful and acting normally, then I wouldn’t consider this an emergency. BUT I would try to get him into the vet as soon as you are able. If it is infection, then if could quickly get worse and he could become ill. Your vet will be able to aspirate some cells from the swelling and look at it under the microscope to tell you that what it is. Your vet will be able to provide him with some antibiotics or anti-inflammatories if needed. If it is a mass, your vet will be able to recommend whether or not it needs to be removed. I hope this helps!
