My cat has a ruptured paw lump with pus. Does it need stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 10 lbs

Two weeks ago I noticed a pea size lump in my cats paw. Now it ruptured with pus and blood. What could be the line of treatment? Does it need sutures? He doesn't have any pain or discomfort while walking.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not think Toby needs stitches. I would recommend shaving the fur away and cleaning with mild soap and water. Use an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent licking. Ideally Toby should be started on an antibiotic. If Toby is an indoor/outdoor cat, this likely a ruptured abscess from a cat fight. Keep indoors until healed. Cats heal quickly! I hope this helps and I wish Toby a speedy recovery!
