My Shih Tzu is drinking and peeing a lot with black vulva gunk. Why?

My shitzu has a black sticky build up around her p.p that won't go away and won't clean up. She is also excessively thirsty and urinating constantly. Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

Poor Bella. Excessive thirst and urination are usually signs of a medical issue. It could be anything from a urinary tract infection to organ issues or endocrine disease. The first step to getting to the bottom of this is bloodwork and evaluation of Bella's urine. I think you mean she has black sticky build up around her vulva. If that's the case, it may indicate she has a skin infection or is licking excessively at her vulva for another reason. I definitely recommend a vet visit for an exam and some lab work to determine what is causing these two issues because she is probably uncomfortable. In the mean time, make sure she has 24/7 access to drinking water and wipe her vulva gently with a lukewarm wash cloth after she comes inside.
