Is my moulting dove's napping and low activity normal during winter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 10 months old

My collared male dove is going through a moult. He is napping a LOT and much less active. We also have fewer daylight hours. His appetite has slightly decreased. I've taken him to two vets who think he's just adjusting to season change and moult. They don't want to do do blood test unless absolutely necessary. His poops are normal. He is preening and bowing an cooing in between his naps. Is this normal behaviour?

This can be normal behavior, especially during a moult or season change. If he's kept indoors, adding in a UV lamp on or near his enclosure and having it set to an on/off day/night cycle may help him perk up a little and remain more active in the winter months. However, it is very normal for birds to be less active as daylight shortens. If he does develop any signs of illness, such as refusing to eat, watery stools, completely listless and fluffed all the time, etc, then going forward with additional vet care is always best.
