My cat has a red mouth sore. Is Oratene gel safe to use on it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has some redness on the corner of his mouth. The thought from a couple of vets on this service is that it may be a lesion, but it's possible it is an infection. One vet recommended salt water, and another said to use antibacterial soap. I was curious if there was an antiseptic for animals that would be safe for use around the mouth and found Oratene gel. Will this be ok to use?

Antiseptics are generally not indicated, because studies have shown that they end up causing more damage than good and can delay wound healing. While the Oratene does have some promising ingredients, you are better off doing a good salt water soak twice a day. I hope that helps and your kitty gets better soon.
